Joseph Branciforte
interval (2024-25)

a collaborative workshop + performance for mixed ensemble

overview

interval
is a modular, time-based composition for distributed ensemble, written and facilitated by composer/producer Joseph Branciforte. The piece invites performers to engage in a collaborative process that blends algorithmic structure, improvisation, and custom-built technology.

At the heart of interval is a fixed, but asynchronous temporal system: each performer plays tones, sounds, or brief melodic fragments at a recurring interval guided by a shared stopwatch-based interface. These staggered timings interlock to form a perceptually free-flowing web of harmonies, textures, and emergent patterns.

Originally developed with students in Berklee College of Music’s Interdisciplinary Arts Institute as part of Branciforte artist-in-residence there in 2024, interval has since seen sucessful workshops and performances across the US.

technology

The piece is facilitated via a custom web-based app developed by Branciforte. Designed for use on mobile devices, the app distributes individualized stopwatch-based timing instructions to performers in real time.

Features include:
  • Configurable pulse intervals per player
  • Collaborative construction of harmonic material and form
  • No installation required — runs in any modern browser

This technology allows precise coordination without conducting, click tracks, or centralized control.

workshop structure

The piece can be developed over the course of 1–3 days, adaptable to institutional needs. A typical workshop includes:

  • Introduction to the piece’s conceptual and technical framework
  • Orientation with the web app
  • Collaborative selection of pitch material, timing parameters, and form
  • Ensemble rehearsals
  • Final performance (public or internal)

Workshops are ideal for small-to-medium ensembles (6–12 performers typical), but can scale in either direction.

skill level & instrumentation

interval is designed to accommodate any instrumentation, any ensemble size, and almost any skill level. The core musical requirement is deep listening and creative engagement, not sight-reading or virtuosic technique.

It is equally suited to:

  • acoustic or electronic instrumentalists
  • sound art, jazz, or classical performers
  • performers working with processing, modular systems, or extended techniques
  • programs focused on improvisation, algorithmic composition, or sound-based practices

Because each realization of the piece is co-constructed in workshop with the ensemble, it is inherently adaptive to the strengths, interests, and tools of the participants.

presenter requirements

  • Rehearsal and performance space with Wi-Fi or cellular signal
  • Ensemble of any configuration. Each performer will need a mobile browser running on smartphone, iPad, etc.
  • One screen for demonstration (optional but useful)
  • Audio or video documentation (optional)
